In the year 976, Leopold I, margrave of what is today southwestern Lower Austria, built his castle in Melk and in 1089, Leopold II gave it to the Benedictine monks from Lambach. The monks have lived and worked in Melk Abbey without interruption ever since. In the 12th century, a school was created and in the 15th century, the "Melk Reform" occurred. In the 21st century, Sr. Romana, Teresa Hayden and Martha Hurley visited. Sr. Romana got in for free.
